Griante posted a maiden win at the highest level last start and trainer David Brideoake is confident the mare will only be better in Saturday’s 2016 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick despite a big increase in weights.
Griante was an emergency starter in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) three weeks ago but proved she was more than up to the class when producing a monumental late turn of foot to hit the line comfortably in the clear of her rivals.
Having carried only 51kgs to success on that occasion, the Good Journey mare has been charged with lugging 58kgs in the 2016 Sapphire Stakes and while conceding that will be a feat, Brideoake told Racing Ahead he has no doubt she will be right in the finish of the race.
“She’s had a very good few weeks since the last run and she comes up to Sydney, has drawn barrier 8 and is in premium condition, so I’m pretty confident,” Brideoake said.
“It’s overcast up here at the moment and we’ve had a couple of nice days but I’d probably hope there’s no more rain – it might take that turn of foot away from here.
“58kgs is a big weight but previous to The Galaxy she’s run in mares’ races and carried significant weight.
“But a drop in class and up in weight, that’s just the way it is but the horse is in great nick and it’s a perfect trip for her. I really think she’ll perform very well.”
Brideoake has confirmed the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) during the Adelaide Autumn Carnival will figure as the next major target for Griante following the Sapphire Stakes, but revealed a trip abroad to contest a race during the Royal Ascot Carnival will figure should she continue to impress.
“If she gets through this run fine and we’re happy to the Sangster she’s off (to Royal Ascot). She will go,” Brideoake added.
Griante has been a strong and consistent performer for Brideoake through her entire racing career so far; posting seven wins and eight minors through twenty-seven starts.
