Griante stormed home to post a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) last time out and has been confirmed to take her position in the field for Saturday’s 2016 Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.
Griante was completely luckless when blocked for a run late in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up, but did her chances of success in The Galaxy no harm when jumping well and taking a positive position just off the pace of the race’s early leaders.
Offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight, the Good Journey mare mustered a typically scintillating turn of foot to savage the line for a comfortable win.
Trainer David Brideoake has underlined the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Adelaide’s Morphettville Racecourse as the next major target for Griante, and is thrilled with the mare’s condition leading into the Sapphire Stakes.
“She’ll run on Saturday then she’s got a bit of time before she runs in Adelaide,” Brideoake told AAP.
“It was a great thrill to win one at that level, especially with one that you’ve bred and reared and had since they were a baby.”
Griante returned to racing in 2015 in excellent condition; running fourth in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) and winning the Group 3 Wenona Girl Quality (1200m) before running on for third in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).
Returning to the paddock after placing second to Avoid Lightning in the Sapphire Stakes, Griante required a couple of runs to find form in spring but responded well in posting minor place finishes in the Listed Cup Club Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) before running a credible fifth in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m).
The 2016 Sapphire Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
