April 10th, 2015

Jockey Steven Arnold has secured just one ride on Day 2 of The Championships this weekend, but is confident of making it count when taking to the saddle of Griante in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m).

Griante has posted a commendable race record of six wins and a further five minor place finishes through his seventeen career starts to date and Arnold has experienced notable success aboard the four-year-old on two of those occasions; running second in a Sale sprint over 1200m in April last year before an impressive performance for third in the featured Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) last time out on March 27th.

Charged with dropping down to 55.5kgs to take the ride in the 2015 Sapphire Stakes, Arnold is thrilled to have retained the ride on the Good Journey mare and is confident of continuing the competitive partnership on Saturday.

“That’s about as light as I get but it’s good races and carnival time so I’m happy to ride that for a genuine chance,” Arnold told AAP.

“But that’s as light as I can ride.

“I’ve been suspended for the week but I’ve had a really good week in preparation and I’m right on track. I’m doing it well, so there’ll be no problems with that.

“She seems to have come back really good and you like to stick with them when they are going well.

“She ran super in the William Reid. She was off the track most of the way from a wide gate and I thought she did a great job to stick on and run third.

“She won in Sydney two starts ago so she handles that way of going and she likes give in the ground.”

Griante is likely to be set for the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) in Adelaide on May 2nd following her run in the Sapphire Stakes and Arnold is hopeful a positive result this weekend will see his association with trainer David Brideoake continue.

“I think she might go to the mares’ race in Adelaide so I’m happy to try to stick on her and build a bit of an association with her,” he added.

Placing fourth in the Group 3 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) first-up on February 14th, Griante returned to the winner’s circle in the Group 3 Wenona Girl Quality (1200m) in her only other start prior to the William Reid Stakes. is currently offering the best 2015 Sapphire Stakes odds, for which Griante can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $7.50 for success.
