This year the $150, 000 Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) will take place at Sydney’s esteemed Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday April 10 as part of the elite line-up of races being conducted on Australian Derby Day.
Nine terrific races are scheduled to take place at the autumn meeting including the programmed highlight, the $1.3million Group 1 David Jones AJC Australian Derby (2400m).
Other featured events include the $500, 000 Group 1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m) and the $300, 000 Group 1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).
The 2010 Sapphire Stakes is sure to attract a brilliant field of quality fillies and mares and two ideal races to keep an eye on in the lead-up to the Sapphire Stakes are the Group 3 Millie Fox Stakes and the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes.
This year the Millie Fox Stakes was won by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Montana Flyer ahead of Chakvetadze. In the past the Millie Fox Stakes has served as a decent guide to the Sapphire Stakes, so keep an eye out for these top two impressive placegetters when the Sapphire Stakes rolls around.
The Birthday Card Stakes will be run on March 27 and as another ideal preparatory race for the Sapphire Stakes, the winners and placegetters will be sure to feature in the later females’ event.
